We bring a product-centric focus to the employee experience

Just as companies have long invested in understanding customer needs to drive results, it's time to make similar investments in employees. We use a product-centric approach to improve the employee experience, cultivating engaged and successful teams that, in turn, improve business outcomes.

3 trends driving change in the world of work

Technology disruptions

The pandemic hastened the move to remote work, uncovering sizable opportunities for distributed teams, digital collaboration, and asynchronous ways of working. Now, recent advances in artificial intelligence promise an even larger upheaval, disrupting everything from content creation to software development. What’s left is the creative, complex, and interdisciplinary work that humans are best suited to tackle — work that demands a more people-centric style of leadership.

Demographic shifts

The workforce now spans five generations, each with its own combination of values and drivers. While these values and drivers will continue to shift, there is a constant: People intrinsically want to do good work, especially work that is rooted in purpose. People-centric leadership, which focuses on trust and outcomes, not monitoring and prescriptive processes, is critical to helping this diverse workforce deliver their best.

Market pressures

Competition is fiercer than ever: The average S&P 500 company lifespan has dropped from 67 years in the 1940s to just 15 as of 2023. Succeeding in today’s market requires flexibility, experimentation, and curiosity, not — as some leaders still believe — a reliance on conventional wisdom. By embracing curiosity and cultivating a culture of trust, leaders can build flexible organizations poised to meet tomorrow’s needs.

These aren’t new trends

For decades, leaders have focused largely on harnessing these trends to “win” with customers. They’ve relied on tools like research, segmentation, micro-targeting, and journey maps — all supported by small armies of product managers and marketers, customer experience specialists, and others — to better understand customers.

Yet, the employees tasked with delivering actionable insights and creating memorable customer experiences are often treated as resources to be monitored. This approach, devoid of trust and defined by policies and performance management, creates a disengaged workforce caught in a doom loop of “checking the box.”

The next generation of successful companies will invest as much in improving how we work as they invest in bringing products to market. That’s because they recognize that people-centric leadership is a competitive advantage: It’s an approach that brings together talented people, aligns them around a shared purpose, and equips them with the tools and support they need to achieve ambitious goals.

Going back won’t work. It’s time to Work Forward.

The seismic shifts in how we work are just getting started. When “how it’s always worked” is no longer effective, how do you adapt? It starts by challenging our conventional wisdom.

Based on our work with hundreds of leaders, researchers, and experts across a range of organizations, we’ve developed key future-of-work principles that drive positive outcomes for people and companies.

What to do

red arrow
Create purpose

Successful organizations are built on shared goals. Clearly define those goals, and then align people around them.

red arrow
Lead with trust

Cultivate a culture of trust by measuring performance by the results, not appearances or labels.

red arrow
Foster belonging

Balance vulnerability with boundaries. Create space to help individuals understand one another and value differences.

How to do it

red arrow
Focus on teams

Prioritize fostering strong teams, using norms — guidelines that set expectations for how a team collaborates — to drive high performance.

red arrow
Embrace flexibility

Attract and retain talent by offering flexibility, which enables deep work and purpose-driven collaboration.

red arrow
Use tech as a tool

Treat technology as an enabler of people, not a replacement. Provide the right tools to help teams achieve goals and enjoy their work.

We know seeing these principles through to fruition requires experimentation and iteration. It means listening to employees, understanding what motivates them, and being transparent when we don’t have all the answers. Most importantly, it means inviting them to build a better future of work together.
